An Intercités train in the countryside

Overview

French trains : Intercités

The TER trains in France usually operate along shorter routes, while the TGV takes travelers quickly and efficiently on longer journeys. But what about the medium-distance journeys ?

Intercités trains (Intercity in English) operate on routes which are not served by TGV, the French high-speed trains. All Intercités trains are operated by SNCF, the French national railway company.

Most Intercités trains operate during the day but a number of them also operate during the night, usually from 8pm to 7am. Intercités trains require seat reservations on most routes.

When traveling on board the Intercités routes during the night, you can opt for a reclining seat or berth. Intercity night trains have private areas for solo travelers, couples, families or friends. For women travelling alone, it is also possible to book a compartment with other female travelers.

Tickets and passholder reservations for these trains can be booked 90 days in advance.
